The read rate depends on the mark

Most read failures are caused by the mark, not the reader: low contrast, damaged cells, oil or reflections. Specify mark quality first, then the reader.

Specify measurable requirements

  • First-read rate, e.g. ≥ 99.9 % over a defined production sample.

  • Read time within the station cycle.

  • Verification grade logged per part, so marking problems are visible before reads fail.

Lighting and position

Dome or diffuse lighting is usually required on curved or machined surfaces. Fix the part position mechanically; software can tolerate some variation, but not unlimited.

Handling no-reads

Define what happens on a no-read: retry, operator scan, or reject. A no-read must never let a part leave without a record.

Connecting to the record

The serial number is the key that links images, inspection results and process data such as torque or press force. Agree the data model with the MES owner before installation.
